To any Southern Gospel fan, the McKameys are a household name. They have entertained and ministered audiences for over 30 years now. I had the opportunity to ask Peg and some of the others questions and find out more about them, how God is leading and what the future holds.
The McKamey’s have been around for a few years. How many years have you traveled and who makes up the group now?
The McKameys have traveled full time since 1980. The group is currently made up of Ruben Bean, Peg McKamey Bean, Connie Fortner and Sheryl Farris. These are the same ones who started full time in 1980. Roger Fortner, Connie’s husband, is a vital part of The McKameys, as is their son Elijah (Eli) Fortner.
Tell us how God has guided and blessed you all over the past year?
God’s hand has been on The McKameys since the beginning. This past year has been the best yet. We anticipate greater things in this coming year. Our latest project is called Joy in the Journey. It is a great follow up to The Message which yielded three # 1songs: “I Keep Praying”, “The Shepherd’s Point of View” (nominated for Song of Year in the Singing News Fan Awards), and “Above and Beyond”. We are excited with 10 fresh and new songs.
In this latest project, what song really speaks to you and what do you hope to see God do through it?
Peg: All of the songs we’ve ever recorded have spoken to me personally. I select the material for our projects. So, I do not select any song that does not speak to me. God has given us so many great songs and we are grateful. We minister all across this nation as well as other nations with our songs. We get requests for different songs each night and we always get requests for “God on the Mountain”.
Sheryl: I believe we have several good songs on the latest project. As the writer of 4 of those, I guess they are special to me and really speak my heart. "God Doesn't Think Like Me" is one of my favorites because its something that God has been teaching me lately. It’s easy to get discouraged when things in life don't turn out as we had planned, or even hoped, but we must remember that God knows exactly what He's doing. And my plans are not usually His, so I must keep my focus on His kingdom and let my kingdom die, surrendering my will to His.
The title cut, "Joy in the Journey", sums up the entire project because we are on a journey, a journey of faith, that continues until we see Him face to face. And while the journey takes time (a lifetime), we have God's sweet presence because He is always with us. You can't get any better than that on this side!
And "When Faith Steps In" takes us on to the other side of eternity, reminding us of what we have to look forward to. Although I didn't write this song, I enjoy getting to sing it."
Connie: Truly every song on the project has a special meaning; however, one that really got me to thinking was a song Sheryl wrote titled “God Doesn’t Think Like Me”. Sometimes I think we think of God like us, not Holy and Above All, like He truly is. God sees our entire life, the whole picture! Sometimes we pray and ask Him to handle something in our life and He chooses a different way than we thought He should, but we realize it is for our good. He wants us to keep our focus on Him and allow Him to handle our lives, and when we go through storms we tend to lean on Him and focus on who He really is!
Is there anything that you would like to say to those of us who have listened to the McKamey’s through out the years and have gone to your concerts?
Peg: We deeply appreciate everyone who listens to our music and supports us at the concerts. If it weren’t for them, there would be no need for us to travel 3 days a week to anywhere we are invited. Promoters and pastors have been kind to all of The McKameys over the years and we are so thankful.
Where do you see God taking the group in the next few years?
I have no idea where the Lord will take us in the future. I will just say we intend to follow Him wherever He takes us. He has taken us to some fantastic places in the past and we know He has great plans for us. Therefore, we are so excited to be walking with Him.
Are there any special needs or prayer request you would like for your listeners to help you pray about?
Pray for our safe travels and health to keep doing what we are doing. We love you all and want to see you in the near future.
Blessings to all of you.
